How to Prepare Your Deck for a Stain

It is important to prepare the surface of your deck before applying a stain. Improper preparation can affect how the stain dries and can result in premature cracking and peeling.
  1. Remove the existing stain or sealant. Past coatings should be stripped away completely. We recommend stripping your surface using products like WOLMAN™ DeckStrip® Stain & Finish Remover to remove existing coats.
  2. Clear dirt, grease, mildew, and debris from the surface of the wood.
  3. Test the surface. You should always test wood before applying a stain to make sure it is ready to coat. Sprinkle some water on different parts of the wood. If the water absorbs rapidly, the wood is ready. If the water beads or puddles, it is not ready. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the water begins to absorb.
